The outside temperature was perfect and I was staring at two absolutely beautiful filet steaks from Scanga Meats, Salida, which had a destination to a couple celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary.
The marinate smelled wonderful and the seasonings were ready to do their thing; the grill temperature sensors hit 550 degrees, perfect for searing and the beginning of the grilling process.
Birds were making a racket in our trees, including the one that had been hit by lightning and was still alive.
Carefully I began the process of searing the filets to keep their juices inside and the aromas were wonderful. After searing I added the seasonings, a touch of marinate, and they began their process to medium rare and medium destinations. Watching the grill cooking temperature and a meat probe I turned the filets one last time and before I knew it they were done with juices rising to the top of the steaks.
Off to Linda who was ready to plate their starches, vegetables and delivery to the smiling customers who told us they really enjoyed their steaks.
Dessert and a relaxed time discussing world, local issues; life stories and celebration of their anniversary; a framed color photograph and we cleaned up, went outside and admired how the window lighting is changing the Queen Anne, the corner up and down lights exposing the beauty in this old 1889 structure. Retiring to our 2nd floor refuge, a glass of cold, sweet peach tea and time to hit the bed with a smile on our faces.
Our joy is seeing others served, watching them enjoy the beauty in the surroundings, hearing their stories and being a part of their lives for a short time.
Yes, this is our “retirement,” and I love my commercial, natural gas, 12 valve, 180,000 btu grill, it is a real man’s grill.

Sunday evening, 5/16, the Queen Anne was host to a YMCA feasibility fund raiser and it was a very enjoyable event.
The efforts to continue these activities in fund raising is grueling, however, Robin and Slyvia are such troopers. They know that all good things require extra ordinary efforts and a belief system in what they are doing.
The event was complimented by the enthusiam of young adults serving the five course high tea. It was a pleasure to see these smiling faces and watch their incredible energy go to work (we have never served a high tea in less than two hours and they did it in one and half hours.)
The guests were gracious and interested in the efforts to place a YMCA. I overhead many stating how important their local YMCA was in their life and I agree with that.
Thank you Dr. Bosse, for sharing your musical gifts and sharing your love for classical guitar. Your concert on the veranda was a special highlight and reward for those working on the project and guests. + I have your “The Billy Joel Collection CD” right next to me and plan to wear it out.
Thank you to Linda, Tammy, our chefs for the night, as usual they prepared a timely and delicious meal. Bless you both.
There are very close bonds created when people join together for a good, meaningful cause, thank you to all.
We were once again reminded of the value in friendships/relationships as we unexpectantly met a dear couple at Big Daddy’s 50’s style restaurant, for the Tuesday night two-bit tuesday burger.
It was so encouraging to get caught up with them and to share the blessings, trials in this life; fully realizing that we all understand that we are not in control of this life, this world.
Also, it was rewarding to meet another couple, who have become dear friends, for our normal tuesday burger. There is something very special in a routine where your life is shared with others and it is done without regard or fear of anything being shared.
Three years ago I lost my closest friend, a man who accepted me as I am, not trying to influence my life, but just enjoy each other as friends. We had a true friendship, relationship. Two years ago I began to see a man wander from his faith, family, company, resulting in the destruction of many; this was a man that prayed with his company staff and then let them all down for personal gain. Last year I watched a man hold a spiritual community hostage as he pursued his personal, sexaul desires, devastating many and requiring many to accept his behavior. Today I realize these last two were acquaintances in life, not friendships, relationships. The true friendship, relationship is one where we protect each other, self sacrificing as our faith directs and sometimes that is hard.
During this past year we have had trusted, long term friendships, which we considered relationships, torn apart by narrastistic behavior, resulting in real “life” trauma for Linda, me and the Queen Anne. However, we know that true friendships/relationships do not damage others, but edify, uplift and encourage each other; we will hold on to that.
And, not to forget our precious Queen Anne customers; as we looked at the Mother’s Day week, the huge number of reservations during the week, the sold out Sunday. We saw “new” friendships/relationships in those who bring their loved ones for a special occasion. Thank you, may you see us as friends, desiring a relationship beyond serving a meal; Linda and I truly love serving each and everyone of you, bless you.
For those of you counting with me, 354 days until my medicare card…
It began mid-week, May 5th, as we started to see special smiles on some of those attending afternoon/lunch and high/5 course dinner teas.
Those special smiles were mothers being treated by family, friends. The smiles continued through thursday, friday, saturday and culminated yesterday, Sunday/Mother’s Day.
Hooray for those who found a way to make those smiles, thank you the husbands, son’s, daughter’s, extended family and friends, who took it upon themselves to find an event to celebrate, show appreciation and love for mother’s.
To my 91 year old mother, thank you for spending the evening meal with us and your great grandchildren; to Linda who labored all week to prepare such an amazing brunch for all those mothers, we love you and what you do/”tea lady.”
To my daughter, daughter in law, thank you for loving the trinity, your husband, children and all of us; you are setting examples for the next generation.
May those who came to the Queen Anne, we pray your time was special and your smile was extended for another year, we love serving every single one of you, your family.
